Sadly, too many bloggers overlook this vital page and do not share enough. Or, worse yet, they do not even have one (GAH – the horror)!!!
The about me page is more than a picture of you and a couple of sentences about your site. It is more than saying, “I love to talk about pink unicorns and fluffy pillows. You can email me here.” It needs to sell you as someone who will trust you and will become that die-hard, loyal fan.
I get that it is tough to write about yourself. It was a challenge I faced as well. But, I worked my way through it, and now, my About Me page tells a compelling story and allows new readers to get to know me before they decide to follow my site.
The rules of writing an about page
Before you jump in and start writing, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when it comes to a well written about page that readers will love. These are your rules and what you need to keep in mind when putting your page together.
What tense will you write in?
In most cases, you will write in the first person (where you say “me” and “I”). That means you’d say something such as “I’ve been blogging for ten years” vs. “Tracie has been blogging for ten years.” The first person allows you to connect with your reader. If you are writing from an anonymous or more educational stand on the site (not anything personal at all), go with the third person.
Include a headshot or image
When you are talking about yourself, people want to know who you are. Even if you have no other pictures of yourself on your site, make sure you include one on your about page. It allows you to connect to the reader.
Don’t ramble on
No one wants to read a 3,000 word about page. No one. Make sure that it gets the point across and shares what the reader needs to know about you and your site.

However, if there is nothing that makes sense for you to link to – then don’t. Don’t link just because someone told you that you had to do it.
You only get one chance to make a good impression. If a reader falls on your about page and finds that it is riddled with typographical or grammatical errors, they may leave and never come back again.
Take the time to read your post again and again. You may even ask a friend or family member to also review it for you – to make sure that it is correct.
Update only as needed
Some experts may say to update your about page regularly. Only do this if you are sharing popular content or your certifications, or life situation has changed.
Even then, make a note to review your about page at least 1 – 2 times a year. That ensure it is always up to date, the links work, and the data included is accurate.

1. Who is Your Reader?
Before you even start, you need to know who your reader is. All too often, bloggers start a site and don’t even know who they are trying to reach. If you don’t have an idea of the person you are writing for, why are you even writing?
Make sure you include details about who your site is for. That way, your readers instantly learn if what you are sharing is geared towards them.
2. What Value Will You Provide?
Before your readers learn anything about you, tell them what they will get by following you. What is it you can do to help them? Some questions you should consider include:
- What will they learn from you? Tell them what they can expect to read when you post.
- Why should they listen to you? Why are you credible in what you share? Whether you are new and learning with them or an expert in your field, make sure you let your readers know. Remember, there is nothing wrong with being a newbie, but make sure you let others know.
- Why should they follow you? Give them an enticing reason to follow you. It could be as simple as “if you are trying to find a way to manage your time, then you are on the right site.”

Do something to encourage action from them. Always leave them wanting to learn more. Ask them to sign up or follow you on social media. Tell them to do something so that they stay connected to you.
6. Give Them Helpful Information
Your about page should also provide value in showing people examples of what they can find on your site. Internal links are not only useful for SEO health; they can also help give the reader additional information. One of the most natural places to do this is in your about page.
Show the reader the type of help you are offering by putting links to some of your best content or the few that are the most helpful. When you provide them value from the start, they are more willing to stick around for more.
